Join us for a discussion on contemporary art making with invited speakers and exhibiting artists Marina Cappelletto, Alessandra Pozzuoli, and Timothy Roda. Presented in conjunction with New Practices in Italian American and Italian Diasporic Contemporary Art, their practice includes painting, photography, and installation, engaging questions of bilingualism, the histories of art and architecture, and the Italian diaspora. Drawing upon a shared visual vocabulary shaped by modernism, the classical traditions of the Italian academy, and vernacular and craft-based practices, the artists examine memory, identity, place, and ritual in works that connect historical inheritance with contemporary experience.

Paintings, sculptures, and site-specific visual works by contemporary artists from the Italian diaspora are on view at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute’s gallery in Midtown Manhattan. Curated by art historian Rosa Berland, the exhibition brings together thirty artists from around the world, working with different media. The work presents a sweeping portrait of Italian American and Italian diasporic artistic practice today. Rooted in traditional and material-based media, the works on view demonstrate diverse approaches to craft and technique from the vast geographic extent of the Italian diaspora, with artists hailing from Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Argentina, Italy, and across the United States. The exhibition features contributions from acclaimed figures as well as emerging artists whose practices are redefining the field.
